I myself have only used two or three different ones and the one I own does not happen to be available any more.

I think most of them work pretty well. If I were buying one (a thermal tester) I would buy the Presidium because they have a meter which reads thermal conductivity ranges for other species of stone which while not too useful for determinative purposes probably is helpful for confirmation once you are used to the unit. There are some that are less expensive and are pocket sized pen units.

Here is an auction with a good picture of the scale.

Dr. Bill Hanneman also has an instrument called the Diamond Eye which he sells for about $80 which also can distinguish between diamonds and many simulants. He can be contacted on this list by Private Message.

Here is a picture

and a better one from Alan Hodgekinson

I´m no pro at all, but I use Presidium duotester and I find it VERY reliable on diamonds! On gemstones? Noop...

I think ill buy the presidium duo tester because i want it to be portable and differentiate diamond moissanite and simulant, for gemstones i got everything i need, thx a lot guys.

My regards

Thermal testers will not differentiate moissanite. It has the same high thermal conductivity as diamond.

C3 have a moissanite tester that relies on UV transparency to make the distinction. There is also a conductivity tester called the moissketeer which I believe is no longer made but can be found occasionally.

Of course moissanite is doubly refractive and exhibits facet doubling which is usually very easy to spot.

If you are really serious about dealing in those stones, learn the Hodgkinson Method.

Any 10 year old kid can learn it in less that 10 minutes

the presidium dual tester does differentiate moissanite and diamonds :D

the facet doubling is a pretty good gift that was made to gemologist lol

I have been using diamond testers for over 15 years. I have used the following diamond testers, mossanite testers and dual testers:
Oris Nelson Diamondite tester
Oris Nelson Moissanite Terminator 2 tester
Oris Nelson Diamond Detective
Culti diamond Selector 2 tester
Ceres Dual Tester XL
Ceres Czeckpoint tester
Presidium Multi tester PMUT
Presidium Gem Tester PGT
Presidium Duotester PDTS7
Tri Electronics Diamond Pro tester
Tri Electronics Diamond Jet 100 tester
Gemoro Ultra diamond tester
Gemoro Pro-D diamond tester
Gemoro Pro-M diamond tester

The difference between the ones listed above is if they test diamonds, CZ's or moissanite. Dual testers test all three! The others either test just diamond or just moissanite. I found www.diamond-tester.com to have all of these brands at great prices. Don't ever be fooled buying a diamond and rest assured that the diamond you buy is real. If you buy a stone that you think is a diamond and it turns out to be fake it will cost you a bundle.

is there anyone here who does not rely on diamond testers? is it not possible to identify diamonds from these simulants with 100% accuracy with just magnification and uv?

I had few time a problem with the the presidium dual tester that gave me moissonite instead of diamond on stone set on rings.
If there is a lot of dirtiness between the prongs and the diamond you can have a conductivity problem I guess.

JollyGreen ... I don't have a diamond tester, and I would bet most people here, even if they own one, don't depend solely upon it.

BTW -- Is that SPAM I smell a couple of posts up? 8)

not yet, it was considered a reply to a question.
