Wasn't it JB who would dissolve sugar into water to use as immersion liquid?

Speaking of JB, where is he anyways?

Doos had two email addresses. I think he's on hiatus again - maybe vacation.

I hope he shows up again sometime soon - I miss him like crazy!

One liquid that might be useful, but isn't on the list, is a commercial product called Refractol. It's used to check faceting rough for flaws. It has a RI of 1.567, and isn't toxic (that I can see from the label).

It's relatively inexpensive and (I expect) smells *a lot* better than clove oil. I purchased some from http://www.facetingmachines.com/accessories.shtml (it's about half way down the page).

I just found another high-RI liquid I didn't know about:

http://shorinternational.com/refracto.htm

The "TruGem" liquid claims to have an RI of 1.62 That's higher than most things on that list, including the Refractol above.

I just wish there was something without the toxicity so you wouldn't have to worry about inhalation or getting it on exposed skin, that had the RI we're looking for, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get my wish any time soon.

:)

i have a question , reason for asking as I want to bring down my cost and avoid toxic substance if substitutes are available

Literature available online / in public domain gives formulation as under

1. Methylene Iodide or Di-iodomethane
2. Saturated with Sulpher
3. Tetraiodoethelene ( learnt that this is carcenogenic) or stannic iodide / tin iodide

Proportion of the above to arrive at 1.8 RI
I want to know any liquid that is available with 1.8 RI or mixed to 1.8 RI ( Non toxic and easily available)

Pal, Baby oil is useless as a RI liquid.

The RI of baby oil is like 1.46-47 Useless on a refractometer.

Unfortunately there is no substitute for the nasty halogenated liquids referred to above. If there was it would probably be equally nasty. (clove oil , cassia oil and cinnamon oil are really nasty and not worth having)

Some of the cheaper formulations lately, leave out the sulphur and the tetraiodoethane to make it cheaper. It costs a couple of units in the 0.01 place.
