I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or not. But since you would use it to store gems for safe keeping you could consider at as equipment. So I'll post here and see what I get.

I'm wondering what those of you who work out of your homes do to protect your gems from both burglary and fire. I've done a ton of research and have ruled out gun safes as they are nothing more than what's called a "Residential Security Container" and offer little protection if subjected to a physical attack with a hammer and screw driver.

For those of you have bought safes to use in your home what kind did you get? Please provide me with details on what type you bought, why you bought it, and what features steered you towards that safe over others. Also please include whether or not you have the contents of your safe insured with a separate jewelry policy or if you have it covered with your home owner's insurance.

I figure if I'm going to spend thousands of dollars on gems I better make sure they're protected from both fire and theft.

Thanks in advance,

Mitch

I bought a safe very similar to this from someone who was going out of business.

Thanks Barbra!

This is the kind of safe I've been looking at. There's a bunch of manufacturers out there that make safes that meet the UL standards for construction. I"m thinking that this is the best way to go.

I've also heard that if your safe weighs less then 750 lbs you need to bolt it down. Frankly, I don't think I want a safe that weighs under 1000 lbs!

Anyway, thanks for your input.

Mitch
