This Wild M5 has a couple of things going for it. It is quite reasonably priced.
It has a plastic base surround which Wild made as hand supports for doing fine work under the scope. It also has a micrometer affixed to its vertical column so out of the box it is ready to make refractive index measurements by the method of du Chaulnes. Sometimes known as the direct method. Not subject to the contact liquid limit either.
These scopes give great depth perception and great image snap!

Down sides: Scope is long in tooth. (though I have about thirty of them at work which were contemporary with this one, built in the 1960s and in tough student service. They ALL work great!) Therefore no parts except from organ donors (which are easy to find) Not a zoom but rather a four magnification turret scope.

The buyer of this scope is likely to be happy with it. Also don't forget to start with a lowball offer. They might take it.

Heh...

Funny that comes along here now. I've had that scope on my desk and have even referred to it once on this forum in a thread about the duChaulnes method. My own M400 is about to receive a similar micrometer attachment.

It did look familiar to me. I wondered whether it was the same one.(but not very much) Did you have it out "on memo"?

No, a mate bought two in an auction and sold them to a dealer, I guess that dealer is now trying to sell them on ebay...

It's in perfect nick... that said... a bit of zooming goes a long way...

I first looked through a Wild M5 in 1974 and said "Wow!" after years of looking through Bausch and Lomb StereoZooms. Regular high resolution compound microscopes(such as your doctor looks through when he biopsies your tumor) do not zoom. They have highly corrected objectives on turret. Zooming is nothing more than a habit one gets used to and comes at a great cost from an optical engineering standpoint. The extended availability of computer optical design software and newer glasses and coatings has helped to mitigate these costs. But a well done barrel changer or slider stereo is hard to beat.

In the magnification range we roam a bit of zoomin' can go a long way without too many sacrifices ;)

Loveland's book arrived today. Looks like I'll be learning a few things in the days to come!
