One has to back them up to the special GIA light box. (Boo) And, they know I don't like them so they behave unreliably for me.
The cussedness of inanimate objects. Like the placebo effect very hard to believe in. But there are gremlins circling overhead all the time.
I still have not figured out why the same stone and the same RI liquid will give a reading on one refractometer and not on another one right next to it at the same time. Strange phenom.
Thanks everybody for your great help! I found an Eickhorst sr 0.01 at a very good price,I hope I won't get disappointed.I still wonder about the GemPro,though buying two refractometers seems to me a bit on the silly side anyway.
Well, the Eickhorst refractometer arrived. Well constructed unit, perfectly calibrated....and the spitting image of the Gem-A model and an unbranded one that I bought about three years ago! Except for the label, naturally. I don't know about previous models of Eickhorst refractometers, but I doubt that this one is made in Germany.
If something is made in Germany it usually brags about it. What about the famous narrow resolution RI scale , does the unit have that? Was it inexpensive? Because if it was priced the way their stuff usually is there should be no doubt about its quality or where it was made or whether it might be a no name refractometer.
Rayner's are not being made anymore to my knowledge though there have been reports of them being "bought" by Rubin and son and there stuff being in the Rubin catalog. I suspect this is more likely remaining inventory. Rayner (nee Rheiner changed during one of the wars) was a british optical firm that did work for th Gem A. I think they are gone.
I paid exactly 649 $ for it, and I got it from gemstone press. The scale is easy to read, but exactly the same as the scale of the unbranded unit I have.
I was expecting to get something "extra" from Eickhorst, I don't know... I'm not disappointed or anything but I got exactly the same product I had. I should have listened to you and chosen the GemPro.Oh well...
Gemstone Press used to sell some instruments called RosGem. They were made by a guy who designed and had them built. Perhaps that has changed. I think he may have been an older guy and it is getting to be a few years ago. I don't know where they were made.
$649 for a refractometer that is identical to an unbranded (chinese?) one is pretty unacceptable imho. They can be bought now on ebay for $75. Every day. Sometimes less.
The unbranded ones are cheaper, but not as cheap as the very cheap you can find on Ebay .Maybe they are better made and that's why the western brands feel confident enough to stamp their label on them.
It's not possible to tell if they are identical from the pictures. I leave it to your judgement having had both in your hands whether or not they are the same. But it is very rare for anything made in Germany to not brag about it.
I note in the Eickhorst advert that they are selling contact liquid from the Gem-A with an RI of 1.79 Tsk!
Eickhorst sells two refractometers. The more expensive one is different from the one I bought,it's not just the same model with a led.I don't know if it's any better though.
