Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. Mods, If I'm posting this inappropriately, my apologies.

Two days ago I won some items at an auction. I was after a Arbe Pro-Plater that was in the lot (to try my hand at electro stripping gold plated electronic stuff, but thats another story). I won it along with another piece of electronic gear I did not recognize.

This other item was a Gran Full Spectrum Diamond Colorimeter model DC 3000.
Having no idea what a DC 3000 was I did a lot of Google searches to figure that and see if I could do anything with it. Many of those searches lead me to this forum, BTW. I'm an electronic hobbyist so I figured I could at worst use it for some future electronic project.

I was floored when I discovered what a DC 3000 was used for and it's value. I plugged it in and turned it on. I puzzled my way through the various self tests which it passed all without complaint. Using my new found Google knowledge I had it test a small loose diamond my son found some years ago. The DC 3000 said it was between an E and F. So my guess is the DC 3000 is working as it should.

I'm a computer technician by trade and an electronics hobbyist, not a gemologist.
As such I have no need for a DC 3000. I'd like to sell it but I'm wondering were to do so. I could put it on eBay (obviously) but I wonder if there are better venues to put a highly specific piece of gemological analysis gear up for sale.

Any guidance would be appreciated! I can post pictures of the unit if requested.

Thanks.

- George

Gran Colorimeters are very nice when they work. The people that made them are essentially gone and the folks that bought the project Sarin and their USA dealer Kassoy only will offer "$600 trade in on a Sarin Colibri" which is newer but also has seen complaints posted on the internet.

If you want to sell your Gran get on ebay and offer it to this guy who sold his DC 2000 fs for $500 in a NOT working condition and would like buy another one. Sell it for about $2,000 which would be fair to both of you. (presuming it does work reasonably correctly. Let him check it against HIS master stones and allow him a return period no questions asked. If it works he will keep it.)

Another person sold a model 2000 recently for $1200. Also not working.
You need a decently graded set of master stones to check the operation and calibration of a Gran.

I could help you if you send me a private message but you need to have ten posts before you can send and receive PMs and emails.
There are no adjustments to the Gran. Everything is done by software through an RS 232 port

Thanks G4Lab,

The additional info you provided was helpful. It's tough learning about something new from scratch, especially when it's obscure.

I'll take a look at the eBay link you posted and see what happens with that. I can understand anyone getting a DC 3000 would want to check it against a master stone set.

I had previously looked up the sold listings you mentioned for the DC 2000's on eBay.
That gave me some insight that a DC 3000 that passes its self tests should have a better value.

The 10 message limit before PM's is somewhat frustrating but fixable.

Thanks Barbra,

Yes, I do appreciate that. I feel in over my head having a DC 3000 come into my possession unexpectedly, trying to learn about it, figure out it's worth and making it available to those who can make good use of it. :?

Sorry, it was sold.

Question. I know there is a Russian instrument colorimeter available.
I know the GIA uses colorimeters and will not disclose which ones.....

Any speculations?
