You also have to get a weight for the stone in air. and calculate accordingly.
Don't waste your time or money. It is easier, faster, cheaper, and not limited by size, if you don't have to weigh anything. Use Specific Density.
Bill - This looks like it will cost roughly zero. I have to have an accurate scale in any event, so all i need is some scrap wood, a cup some thread and a bottle cap. When I have looked the cost of your relative density scale it was around $100.

You are correct.

That is a different situation. Everyone should have a scale of some type to weigh things on, but one doesn't need a scale to measure relative density, if you know how.

Where? In my book, I only tell people how to make their own Specific Gravity and Diamond Balance.
In 1975 the GIA adopted that instrument and taught it to their students, until they found it cut into the sale of the expensive balances they sold.
Today, my NEW Relative Density Balance is so simple and so cheap that one cannot make a profit by making and selling them, so I intend to give the plans to worthwhile individuals at the Tucson Show next month.

Dr. Hanneman, saw this website today, with a Hanneman SG balance for sale for $139 as a regularly offered item: http://www.mineralab.com/Hanneman/

Look forward to hopefully seeing you at Tucson next month!
So I just built this thing. It is a slight improvement on the bottlecap design, as the wire will lift up to allow you to put on the gem and then put it down into the water.

I hope to see you at Tucson - by the way - is there going to be a dinner?

I never made or sold that instrument. That is an old design and made by Mineralab. Today, my NEW Relative Density Balance is almost completely different in concept.
Interesting point about using a balance that is legal. If you are going to use a balance for the purposes of trade in the UK it has to be certified by the Trading Standards Department. You commit a serious criminal offence otherwise. No real problem here, you just phone the Department, take your balance along and they will test it there and then. They then affix a sticker confirming its accuracy (not a bad service for free).
