Precious Metal Hallmarks – What's Over the Horizon
Presented by
William Whetstone and Danusia Niklewicz
Hallmark Research Institute

Wednesday, May 6

Your jewelry has a story to tell. Whether in the auction, retail, secondary or appraisal market, a hallmark gives you provenance that can definitely change the value of a piece just by its presence.
Take a trip around the world with the Hallmark Research Institute (HRI) as you learn about the impact of precious metal hallmarks on the global jewelry industry. HRI unearths hallmark systems from old and new worlds and shares its research in incredibly organized books and lectures. This makes our jobs easier and gives us an opportunity to tell a more detailed story about our jewelry.
HRI Directors William Whetstone and Danusia Niklewicz, experts in jewelry and appraising, will present general trends in worldwide hallmarking, with specific references to countries that are expanding the use of hallmarks. They will also review hallmarking practices of the Middle East and Africa, including modern and historical Arabic countries, Asia, as well as British and French Colonial territories.
Whetstone and Niklewicz, along with Lindy Matula, who will also attend the event, founded the Hallmark Research Institute and authored the standard in hallmark identification “World Hallmarks – Vol. I. – Europe, 19th to 21st Centuries.” They are working on the next volume in the series, “World Hallmarks – Vol. II – Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas,” due to be published later this year.
Whetstone is a historian, numismatist, expert witness, past president of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), and HRI’s director of historical research. Niklewicz, GIA GG, FGA, ISA-CAPP and ASA, is a past instructor for GIA, an independent appraiser, an expert witness and director of research and international coordinator for HRI. Matula, GIA GG ASA, is an independent appraiser, expert witness and HRI’s president and director of editing.
Please come, listen, and learn.
Attendees are encouraged to bring personal copies of the presenters' book for signatures. It is a rare opportunity to have all three authors together. Additional copies of their World Hallmarks - Vol. I. book will be available for purchase.
