The gem markets in Thailand/Burma are very quiet. The gem trade in Thailand/Burma has been hit hard by the economic slump. No one knows where the bottom is. Meanwhile, students from the gem identification class are in Burma. I will post more details later.
Thai VOA exnds in 2 days and can't go to KL anymore (friend who has my computer - main reason for going to Malaysia - is in Iran for a month).
I could 'do' another Chanthaburi gem market weekend and tie it in with Cambodia, but decided to give Mae Sot a whirl.
Any hotel recommendations, and gem-related recommendations?
If I can be bothered I will do another rubbish travel report on the place on the Field Trips forum (a'la Chanthaburi).
I won't be there long as I'm paying for a room in bangkok until the 9th, and it would inefficient to avoid staying there too much (although Bangkok costs a fortune now)

Well go to the gem market downtown it is open from 10am to the afternoon. There is the Siam hotel just nearby. This is the place I stay usually when I go to Mae Sot... Not the best resort in the world, not the worse, just a convenient place.
All the best,
