As some have seen
I love my sphene
Brilliance that there's never been

Okay, enough rhyming. Anyone else ever heard of synthetic sphene? First, why would anyone produce it? Second, could this actually be strontium titanite? Anyone have a clue?

Hi all,
I have had in my hand what I think is this material.... It was CZ.

No answer from the seller. I've seen "sphene" quartz but never anything that claimed to be synthetic sphene. CZ does seem to be the consensus. If I hear different from the seller, I'll post.

Without seeing and testing the stone it's hard to guess. The most dispersive man-made stone I've ever seen is synthetic rutile which was marketed years ago as Titania. I know the Russians are making it, and doping it to green (or another) body color proably wouldn't be a big trick.

Other high-dispersion diamond simulants available from Russian labs include strontium titanite, as mentioned; lithium niobate ("linobate,") and lithium tantalite. YAG also could be a candidate, and it's already available in several colors.

Classy Carat and others were correct. I finally heard from the seller and he was marketing sphene-colored CZ as simulated sphene.
