I have an old gold ring, 18 carats gold, with a reddish orange stone, oval cut, diameter 14x12mm and 6mm depth. It is very clear, you can see the various shades of orange in the middle and red on the sides. I would like to ask for advice concerning identification, before choosing the gemologist and the quality of service. I visited the jeweller to gather some preliminary information. He could not clearly identify the stone, suggested it might be topaz. I have researched on my own and found a padparadscha saphire stone which seems to be identical, the link to the film presentation below. The degree of clarity and transparency of the real stone is much more similar to the stone on the film, than I could show on the photographs.
Thank you for all the help.

If the jeweler suggested topaz they don't know much about gems. That said, while I can certainly say it's not topaz I can't tell you what it is from the images. It could well be sapphire, or it could be something else. You need real data like specific gravity and refractive index to establish an identity with any certainty and even then you'll need a more detailed examination to tell if it is natural or synthetic. That said, the color would not qualify as Padparascha--too orange, not enough of a pink component.

Impossible to identify from the picture. The mounting is a common commercial piece that was popular in the 80's.
This would NOT be a difficult identification for a gemologist.
It is sad but true, most people working in jewelry stores are sales people who are as qualified (or unqualified) to be selling scarfs, handbags or shoes as they are selling jewelry.
Thank you very much for the quick reply. For sure I will seek professional expertise, I appreciate however any preliminary information. As can be seen, even 'should be' specialist cannot always help. Even I thought that colour didn't indicate topaz.
