Send it to GIA or AGTA

You know what, I think that's exactly what I'm going to do. I was looking at it under a (cheap) microscope but it does have the needle inclusions and what looks like some kind of embedded organism and it actually looks very much like a natural stone in every way to me. This thing just doesn't look like man made glass....not to me anyway. Maybe I'll be RICH !!! or poor from spending the money to have the GIA examine a piece of aqua colored glass. Do you know what the GIA charges to do an analysis on a colored gem Barbra?

ok thanks a lot for that info. I'll post back after the ID with either a happy face or a sad face. I may try to take a good picture or two of it also and post it here. I'm also going to try cutting a few pieces of glass to see how they come out.

Hope your face will look like this:  (ok, without the green hue...)

About the "obsidian" I have heard some dicussions about it, and most have come to the conclusion that the Natural Obsidian from Java (often stated as the origin) really is manmade glass. Not 100% sure though...

If that nice blue is something natural, I'd be quite happy to hear. But I'm afraid this is not the first time I hear about aquamarine-like 'blue obsidian' and the other time it was glass :? My 'test' was a seller's admission of the fact.

It just seems crazy that some natural material with such appealing color remains so obscure.

Certainly, a lab's positive ID is better then all the reasoning.

Yes that's a good point. If I were to ever want to sell it, certainly no serious buyer would take a blue green obsidian claim seriously without a cert.

I sort of feel weird about the whole thing because it's in a riker case right now with a lot of expensive outstanding aquamarines and it looks fantastic. Normally if you put an aqua in there that isn't up to par it sticks out like a sore thumb.

To think of the possibility of a (albeit very well cut) piece of glass looking at home with a bona fide collection that took years to cut and accumulate gives a strange feeling. I paid $35 for it. HA. It has definitely proven to be a major conversation piece though. Everyone wants to look at it and hold it. It's sort of like golem's ring or something. I don't like the thought of mailing it off to anyone to handle it...but I'm gonna have to I guess.

Where are you located, cutter? Quite possibly there's a forum member nearby who would offer to assist you, and save you the trauma of separation from your prize. :D
