Allen - you are 100% correct. I've been lurking around for a while. But a day came i could no longer hide in shadows. And voila, i'm here, to learn from you - experienced and knowledgeable, and above all polite and patient. Taking your time to explain things to newbies. I should have registered here much earlier, that’s my only regret.
Yes, I believe that this board is unique in both the level of expertise of the members and in their willingness to share their knowledge. They are not without their sense of humor though and it appears that yours fits in just fine.

I'm sure it is just that. Don't see any need for it with the wealth of colours already being manufactures through heat, irradiation and coatings for the stuff.

How difficult is it to distinguish green tourmaline from any other green transparent stone, assuming the stone is mounted in a ring with metal on all sides (so I don't think specific gravity can be measured)? If the ring were taken to a graduate gemologist, could he/she identify it with 99% certainty?
Without taking the stone out of the ring, it might be possible to see strong dichroism with a London dichroscope or the similar filter built into Dr. Hanneman's synthetic tanzanite filter.
