Hi all,
as you probably already know, the GIA has published all the back issues of their G&G magazines of the period 1934 - 1980 online as PDF's. This is a massive amount of gemmo knowledge which has been made available to the public free of charge.
Bravo...!
On the GIA site there also is indexes available. Again, as pdf's. This makes searching the back issues for a certain topic possible. Sort of... it's still a bit tricky to find everything one needs.
Enter Joe Gill...
a few weeks ago Barbra posted something about a certain Joseph Gill in one of the forums here. He'd been a well known gemmo in the states and had set out on a world trip with his wife 6 years ago. I looked at his site, thought: "nice going, Gill" and closed the window again.
Then, in the beginning of last week my first copy of the Mineralogical Record arrived (great magazine btw!). In it was an article on Gill's index and digital library... It brought me back to his site to check out what the fuss was about.
Well, it appeared that Joe Gill has indexed a large part of everything ever written on gemstones by subject over the period Middle Ages - 1980-ish. I fell in love with his index instantly. It is an indispensable aid for every gemmo researcher and gem enthusiast who wants to increase his knowledge on gemology. Gill has made it available as a word doc (downloadable here).
That got the brain cracking...
Excellent index + online availability = possibility.
Enter AJU.
Got Joe Gill's permission and set to work with a part of the index. AJU combined the G&G sections of the main gem materials of Gill's index with the GIA back issue archives and have listed the subjects with links behind them at AJU. So, from today on, when you wonder about a certain gemological something (let's say... star spinel for instance) you can hop onto AJU, go to the spinel page and you will find a list of topic links at the bottom of the gemstone page. Find your star spinel articles, remember the page number that's behind the topic and simply click the link to download the G&G issue from the GIA. Scroll to the listed page and voila... direct access to over 45 years of gemmo publications, only seconds and a few clicks away...
The following pages have been updated with G&G article topics from Gill's index:
