Love some of those aquas there Wayne - some of the smaller crystals have a particularly nice colour!
Yeah, too bad it couldn't have been the large ones with the darker blue. The 2 largest ones are 63 and 54 cts. At least they all at least have some blue. I have Another lot that was all more a greenish color.

I wish my "secret digging spot" would produce garnets with that level of saturation - sucks a bit to keep finding perfectly clean, inclusion-free stones that are just a bit too dark for normal faceting
52 carat yellow-green parti sapphire.
Lefty, I totally agree with you. Finding large clean stones that are too dark to cut and can't be lightened really sucks. The beauty in good rough is related to it's potential as a cut stone.

I have to confess that I'm not a faceter yet, rather I just torture pieces of glass until all their potential is gone and I'm staring into the crooked little face of a Picasso shaped stone.
Still I dream that one day I'll be skilled enough to move onto real semi-precious rough.
This is a piece of beryl from my rock collection that I'll never be qualified to cut. I do enjoy it's potential however.

Never be afraid to cut anything rocksarefun. It doesn't take all that long to develop these skills with plenty of practice.
It took me ages to cut my first sapphire just because I was too scared to cut a stone actually worth more than the smoky quartz I had been faceting, when I did it turned out a treat. Of course, those ones belonged to myself - I will admit to being a bit nervous the other week when I cut a large yellow sapphire belonging to someone else. It finished beautifully at around 6.5 carats, a lovely vivid yellow, virtually flawless. It would be worth some substantial sum and I'm glad I did the job.

Tell me there's a picture!!
There is but I suck so badly at taking pictures of faceted stones that I gave up trying I just can't get them to look even remotely like the stone does in real life. I'll see if I can chase it up, I'm sure I took a few photos before I handed it to the owner.

21 carat Rubyvale blue-green. Again, not mine, cutting it for my father. There's a fair-sized crack at a corner but once that's been dealt with it looks like a rectangle should get the most out of it.

Just wondering what you think would be a good design for these two Amethyst? I don't have many pieces of great rough and hope to cut them so that they would sell if the wife doesn't take them. 77ct. and 123ct.

Very pretty!
For me, personally, I've never regretted cutting into my most valued rough,...in fact, those have been my most cherished faceting experiences and the finished gems are always the hardest for me to part with to sell.

Hi Steve. You could try Marco Voltini's "Nymphea". I'm cutting one now in a piece of mauve cristinite to get some idea of how it performs in mid to light amethyst. "Cleopatra's eye" is a beautiful design as well and those pieces look a good shape for it from what I can see - though Cleo's eye is a very deep design and that rough might be just a little too saturated.
