Not sure if I am posting this in the right place. Feel free to berate severely me if it is not. :D

My mother in law has a cut aquamarine in a ring. When I first saw the stone the aquamarine appeared clear. She normally removes her rings before doing the dishes but this particular time she did not. The stone has appeared cloudy ever since.

Warm water should not effect a stone like this. The only reason that I can think of is that the pavilion was not really polished but coated with a lacquer to give the appearance of being polished and the lacquer washed off
in the dish water.

Am I on the right track? or is there another explanation for this?

Sounds like a coated stone rather than an Aquamarine....my aquamarine has washed many a dish without any affect other than being cleaner...

Where did she purchase the aqua ring?
Is the store still in business?
She should bring it back and ask them to explain what's going on.
Let us know what she finds out. :)

One cause that can do this is a clarity enhanced stone, aka. fracture filled, when filled with a lower end CA or epoxy sometimes hot water can weaken things enough mix a little and cause the epoxy/CA to turn hazy. This is why Opticon should be used or another resin when doing this sort of treatment.

This is just a hypothesis, considering I have not seen the stone in question. I picked this scenario because I actually recently experienced the same thing on an Aqua a client of Jen's brought in to have looked at. Jen got a little stumped and requested my help, so I obliged like a good little ball and chain, lmao.  But, that is exactly what it ended up being.

If you have a loupe or magnifying glass, or better yet a microscope, or access to one, take a look at the stone under magnification and see if you can see what looks like off-white kind of milky spiderwebbing going through the inside of the stone.

Well, many things could be going on...BUT without more information, this is blind speculation.
Let's hold off until we hear back from ozymandias.

thanks for the speculation so far.

I will see my mother in law in the next week or so. I will get a picture of the stone in the ring and post it then. I will also dig out my microscope and have a good look at the stone and let you know what I see.

The place she got it from folded a month or so after she purchased the ring (any wonder). this was before all this happened. It's a pity I would love to have heard their explanation.

Thanks for the help so far Will post pictures when I have them.
