Is there a sure proof method to tell the dyed and natural lapis apart by the picture?
Is having a lot of pyrite indicative of anything at all?

thanks in advance

One would have to test the stone in person.

I'm in Afghanistan; I see a lot of Lapis. I use alcohol wipes...works every time. A lot of pyrite is indicative of a high percentage of pyrite. High quality Lapis is stark blue with as little pyrite as possible and as little calcite as possible. As in any other material, it's up to the purchaser, or recipient. Some lapis cabachons look great with characteristic pyrite groupings; or patterns. The best blue is about the same color as the topic text...

There's honestly no good way to tell anything about anything with a picture. Think on-line dating :-)

Hi hildebdr,
Alcohol huh? I was thinking acetone (found in nail polish removers) was better. Best regards, Lee

I agree to the use of Acetone but pure 96-98% alcohol is second choice.

I don't know much about the base of dye but in the commercial painting business acetone and lacquer thinner are the two hottest solvents commonly used in the states. Best regards, Lee

Wipe your stone with acetone or alcohol. If it loses its color then it's a fake or a poor quality lazuli dyed to imitate better quality lazuli.
