An update from Teofilo Otoni. early in the year we saw what is being called " Paraiba Quartz" I have nor had, nor sold any. It had mushroom clould shaped copper based inclusions and was interesting. Also saw a 13 facetied crysoberyl this week. If you people like I can give posts.

A local dealer here in SA has a treated quartz that has a Paraiba like colour, and was marketed as Paraiba quartz. They are actually selling the terminated crystals themselves, rather than faceted stones. I enquired regarding the crystal, and he said they were treated to produce the striking Paraiba colour in the crystal. He said he thought they had been treated with titanium but didn’t seem too sure. They did not look real at all.

He also mentioned that a natural quartz coming from Paraiba has Gilalite inclusions that produces a blue look quartz from the copper content in Gilalite. He said that the specimen he saw was included and not very pretty really, but definitely bluish.

Yes Martin, your are right.

In the last issue of G&G their talk about blue medusa like inclusions in a quartz from Paraiba (Brasil) formed by Gilalite.
In this quartz there is an other type of inclusion "accicuclar / fibroradiated" blue inclusions that are probably Gilalite (but may be Apachite, Shutakite, Planchéite... accicular copper mineral in fact...No raman have been done on this type of inclusion).

I found this type of quartz one year ago.
Here some photos of the "accicular" type of Gilalite inclusions:

Gilalite probably (or Planchéite, Apachite, etc..):

I have saw one batch of quartz with the "Gilalite medusa like" inclusion in the "06/2005 Sainte Marie aux Mines" mineral show.. a friend bought one... I have to do photo to show you the "medusa like" inclusion of Gilalite. :)

The November issue of good ol' Lapidary Journal has a great article by John Koivula and John White about the Brazilian quartz with gilalite.

Best regards,
Chris

thks Martin,

I have done other photo (as promise) yesterday night of the other forms of Gilalite inclusion.
In fact they are much "mushroom like" ( as david say) than medusa.

They can be Blue or Green:
Image

They grow allong a plan (surface) (Plan P: sur=on sous=under)
Image...
..like fluorite inclusion in madagasacn quartz
Image

On the grown plan there are some "granulates / seeds".
Image

Some Gilalite tufts have a "tail" (that can look like medusa as described in G&G)
Image
Image

Some tufts are empty with liquid / bubble in replacement
Image

In majority case gilalite tufts look like "emispherical / half sphere" tufts with a flat face allong the plan of growing.
Image

This is (to my sense) a beautiful inclusion that give another posibility of "blue quartz".

Note: I am interested to found quartz with blue papagoïte and/or quartz with bleu indicolite.

It's always such a pleasure to see your photos Gemca. And you're right, those do look more like a mushroom than a jellyfish.

Thanks to this stone, I found you all.

I was doing a search on the "new medusa quartz" that I saw on a jewelry (yes, I spell it wrong since I'm from the US, lol!) site. I love included quartz so immediately had to know all there is to learn about this!

Here is what I was looking at to begin with.....
