hi Barbra
Although the original photo definitely could have used more contrast, that isn't what I was grumbling about when I said "the conversion from tif to jpg format doesn't do this picture justice".
A tif file doesn't display on your forum. And it shouldn't, because tif files are huge!

tiny measurements
I am building another microscope from scratch, as I am wont to do. Though, unlike most of my homemade microscopes, this one can be used to photograph gem inclusions. While I plan to add a few more bits, right now the current build is ridiculously good for making precise length measurements of ...

Re: Microscope for Gemology - Trinocular
If you can spend $7k, why not buy the best modern trinocular gem microscope? I really like my Meiji GMZ trinocular microscope with 10x and 20x eyepieces.

Re: On Loupes
I concur.
I know optics very well, spending thousands a year to do what I want. I spend a pretty penny on my eyeglasses that I wear every day.
I’d feel naked at Tucson without my Belomo loupe!
My son uses a Belomo for all his normal museum studies of ancient coins.
Thumbs up!

Must say, if you haven’t visited Little One for “brunch”, should visit Easily accessible from GJX by tram.

Re: Tairus synthetic "Colombian Colored" Emerald
The green and violet should work just fine. Just remember, you need laser safety glasses that block those colors, but allow red light to pass through. Regular safety glasses let all colors through.

Re: Tairus synthetic "Colombian Colored" Emerald
To follow up, if someone is only interested in seeing emerald red fluorescence when illuminated by green or violet laser pointer, laser safety glasses work even better (and are slightly less costly) than a good longpass filter.
These glasses are perfect for the job.

Re: Tairus synthetic "Colombian Colored" Emerald
I've a suite of Tairus emeralds, including Colombian colored emeralds. In fact, Alberto and Mikko took a Raman spectrum of the stones for their library. But Tairus makes other colorings of emeralds too. So, a Tairus emerald may not be a Tairus Colombian colored emerald.

Re: Spectrometry
The Cr 3+ fluorescence always peaks in the red, so an easy solution to reduce the input signal in that region is to place a shortpass filter with cutoff edge around 600 nm between the stone and light collection.

Re: Gemolite V LED replacement darkfield lamp
A 6000K LED lamp provides a continuous spectrum across the visible range. Typically there is a prominent blue peak in the spectrum, but otherwise it is a good mimic of daylight.

Re: Blue Amber with big inclusion
Another recent article about blue amber
I've never seen any documentation of inclusions in blue amber. Only about color grading. The blue amber I've seen at Tucson are small and clean, ready to be used in jewelry. Not any piece that big.
