Re: GIA Gem Instruments Microscope - Model 792 Gem Scope II

They will probably work, there is a lot of Meiji-compatible eyepieces out there. 20x is a bit much though, you might want to try 15x or see if you can get a 2x auxiliary lens to screw on to the bottom.

Re: Kornerupin from Vietnam

Very interesting! What kind are we talking, the purple and green ones everyone desperately wants?
It does seem like Luc Yen can produce almost anything.

Great get!
The included areas still cut nice stones.
I always like stones with the blue axis up personally.

Re: Treatments of mineral specimens: is there an ethical gap

Usually dye or filling leave surface indications. Which isn't to say it's impossible, just that it isn't trivial like most treatments are.
As to the ethics, of course such things need to be disclosed but it's typically done early in the supply chain by people who aren't so concerned about that. I do ...

Re: Tucson 2025 dinner

It would take more like 20 days to see all the shows. My dad managed it one year but it was a real challenge.

Re: Treatments of mineral specimens: is there an ethical gap

honestly the only color treatment that I think is probably common in mineral specimens is irradiation, and labs can't really detect that (so it's ubiquitous and mostly detectible contextually). Even gentle heat is going to be at least iffy for most specimens I would think. Obviously there are plenty ...

Honestly me either, I am so worn out. But the amazing food in Tucson helps. Really looking forward to getting back to cutting and making videos.

Re: Tucson 2025 dinner

Just got packed up last night at 22nd street, flying out tomorrow.
We did a bit better than last year overall. There were a larger number of people looking to get into faceting or who had just started which is nice to see, though of course also a group of people our booth selects for.
There was a ...

Re: Synthetic diamonds price free falling in HK June show

There was a hybrid set recently announced using a mix of lab and natural, presumably to get around the lack of cape colors.
Personally I wonder if the ultra tight color grading is going to maintain relevance in the future. It seems like something that makes more sense in the context of a tightly ...

The pieces I saw at JOGS were kind of cool, included, deep color, 500-600/g.

Re: How to choose a camera for a trinocular gemology microsc

If you have a 3d printer you can remove the 23mm tube (at least on the sz7) and make an adapter to mount a micro 4/3 camera directly without any intermediate optics. That should give a pretty optimal image on this kind of stereo.

Seems very solid, except I don't think the Gemolite NXT is a good idea even if you can spend 7k. Way too much for a chinese unit.

OK, let's go ahead and say the 6th at 7pm. Casa Valencia was a good venue last year I think--it has good Mexican food and seafood.
Sorry you won't be there Steve! It will definitely be a smaller group than sometimes.

The color tone and distribution looks suspicious in the cloudy photo imo. I would bet this is dyed ethiopian material.

Tucson 2025 dinner

Hi everyone! It's that time of year again.
Who will be at Tucson, and when? Barbra, is this the year of your long-awaited return?
Last year's dinner was at Casa Valencia and I think it went really well.
