Re: Heating dark tourmaline to enhance color

In my experience these kind of iron colored tourmalines do not heat well. Not worth the risk of cracking to heat them.

Re: Beyond the Loupe

Agree with much of what you say. Except even mined diamonds are not rare. When it comes to diamonds, rarity should no longer pay a part in pricing.

Re: Anyone tried the facetron concave machine?

I haven't tried one since the change in ownership. But when I did the Ultratech was clearly superior for many reason.

Re: Tarrifs on Diamond Imports as of August 1

Yes, if you are primarily dealing in low cost rough, like Lab Corundom, or small Umba Sapphire and heavier ring designs then the calculations are different. But in that kind of small boutique business the rings are most often custom or cast and manufactured here in the U.S.. There are no tariffs on ...

Re: Tarrifs on Diamond Imports as of August 1

I don't know about the impact of gold. The average 14K ring weighs between 2 -5 grams. 14K plumb gold is .585 pure. So gold content accounts for just under $200 of the cost. It doesn't take much in the way of gemstones and diamond to match that cost component. Considering that the median price of an ...

Re: Tarrifs on Diamond Imports as of August 1

Pricing of gemstones has been traditionally so full of gamesmanship over the years that assigning values for applying tariffs will never account for significant costs.

Do you understate the value on export to lower export taxes? This is a common practice.

Then do you overstate costs on import t6o ...

Re: inclusions

These two pictures that you posted earlier show surface scratches. These are what is based my mention of this on.

If you want to continue working with stones I strongly suggest you invest the time and minimal money required to get some gemmology tools. A refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope ...

Re: inclusions

I have to disagree. In addition to interior inclusions of different types, the images you posted clearly show both surface abrasions, and abraded facet junctions. This I am very confident in.

I concur that both the types of inclusions, and the variety of inclusions shown in the images support a ...

Re: inclusions

Some of the inclusions look like Apatite XLS to me. Which again is consistent with Scapolite as the stone. Also the extent of scratches on the facets and abrasions at the facet junctions are consistent with a stone of low hardness. Finally, the iridescent inclusions/areas in the stone is common and ...

First instinct is Scapolite. But on-line guesses are just that. Not reliable.

Yep, Trump want many times our margin on Diamonds, both Lab and Natural. Same is now true of colored stones. Makes doing this kind of business hard.

Re: I am teaching a new student he has facette

I don't see why you need more measurements than that. Cut the facets to the desired size, shape and position. Then polish them. Where the polishing is happening on a facet tells you which way to adjust the angles. Cut the stone, stop relying on the machine.

Re: Confusing gemstone report

Although it is often possible to detect indications of Beryllium treatment in Sapphire through Zoning, or melted XTLS indicating very high temperature treatment, this is not always the case. The definitive test for Beryllium Treatment in Sapphire is not magnification based. It is done by advanced ...

Re: Diamond Mis-Identification Problems

Here is the problem. Thermal conductivity testers can mistake Moissanite for Diamond. Electrical conductivity testers will often mistake high Boron HTHP grown or treated Lab Grown Diamonds as Moissanite. So in my lab neither can be relied on as a single test. I have seen all of these problems in my ...
