Hi,

Can anyone help with any information on these two cameos, the Scottish Agate has a signature scratched on the back which looks like Silz, and the other cameo has an unusual scene, and is set in what looks like Irish bog wood and has the number IIX or XII scratched on the back.

Any information would be gratefully received such as identity of possible carvers & date.

Thanks,
Indy

I can only add a few photos at a time, so will add more hopefully straight after posting this message.

The number scratched on the back of the cameo in pinchbeck is probably to match it to its setting. Such items were semi mass produced but the hand carving of the shell means that each one was slightly different, hence the need to match it to the setting. I am surprised that the one in silver is not hallmarked, which would give you a date instantly, but the style is certainly 1870's/1880's Scottish, although the combination of agates and a cameo is unusual.
