ASA Offers: Victorian Costumes and Jewelry in the 19th Century
March 23, 2016; 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm ET / 9:00 am - 11:00 am PT

This is an online webinar course that can be accessed through the internet.

All dressed up with somewhere to go? Women and men throughout the ages have added that last flair - fashion and jewelry - that established at a glance the individual's position in society and expression of self. Fashion and jewelry styles have dramatically changed over the years, and recognizable periods have emerged. To fully assess the fashion and jewelry, it must be examined in the context of the historical, social and cultural fashions of the day. In this webinar, we will identify the fashion and jewelry of the Victorian era to the beginning of the Edwardian period within the historical and social context of the fashions of the day. We'll interpret the figural themes closely identified with these major periods and discuss the concept of fashion and jewelry as both individual and societal self-expression. From the belle in hoop skirts and plunging neckline to the high dog collar neckline, you will discover answers to the age-old question, "What in the world am I going to wear?"

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Recognize different costume styles throughout the Victorian Era;
Identify different jewelry styles that accompanied the 19th century;
Discuss what the causes were in some style changes and the reason behind it;
Interpret figural themes closely identified with this major period to be able to determine the concept of fashion and jewelry as both individual and social expression.
