I am in Cambodia and an acquaintance of mine told me that in his village a large single stone has been found and sent me some photos, he wants to sell it and I have little experience besides diamonds especially when looking at rough stones. They think it's a ruby so I found this forum and I hope you guys have a better idea of what it is and if it is worth anything.

Very large rubies that are not gem quality are actually pretty common, so it is possible. A rule of thumb though is if you are not an expert in this kind of stone, stay away from it.
That said - I like the color, but not the transparency. It could be a ruby, but there isn't enough information given to really tell.

Thank you do you know where can I find some guide that can help me with this stone? In Cambodia I don't know any proper gemologist and jewelry stores have no idea about rough stones.

Yes, it looks like ruby, but as has been remarked, it isn't very transparent. It may be improvable with heat treatment but 1) that's a serious gamble and 2) heat treated rubies, whilst they look nice enough, sell at a serious discount. So, keep your money in your pocket unless it is 1) cheap and 2) you like a gamble.

Hi,
that is very interesting! I am in Cambodia and always on the lookout for new gem sources. Would you mind sharing the region in which this stone was found? I know it's an old post, but I hope that the right person will read this
