You also have to be careful of what prices you are talking. The appraiser was talking of wholeseller prices if I read correctly, some of the other prices mentionend (300-400/ct) seem to be endcustomerprices to me. So here is also a big difference. Also Bonhams will normally sell to endcustomer prices.... Just my to cents.
I also think the prices really depend on the size, as the auction prices seem to reflect. The value guide mentions stones 10 carats and up to be the same price per carat, but in my research from Bangkok, a ten carat stone would sell much much cheaper then say a twenty carat stone per carat because of the size, not quality, simply because of rarity of larger stones.
There are many 10 carat stones available but once they are in the twenties, or thirties its not easy to find. But the value guide doesn't really take this into account. So how would one value a 40 carat zircon? or 50 carat zircon? The larger sizes usually end up in museums since they are so rare, such as these.
Anyways for these larger stones, i think the only way to determine the value is by auction price. So when doing an appraisal, looking at auction prices might be the best way to go to find the accurate market prices. Anyways, just my rant, Thanks for the replies.
This time the value seems overstated for the same stone different appraiser. I have no idea how it got so high!!!!!!!! I was expecting 10-15k, its retail was 58k. I guess the retail is much higher. but the appraiser even said what am i going to do with it??? no one in Canada would buy it because its so deep n chunky that I cant make jewelry with it.
I do agree with Barb, I got it anyway just for peace of mind and a second opinion, i would have to send it away for GIA tho, and i heard its a 2 month wait.
