Hi I have a few questions on some gems my father had he was an independent jeweler, and he passed away last month. due to legal fees for his passing i must part with some. one he has reads on the bottom of the box it's in reads 201 carots,@ $30 ct $6030.00. when you put it up to the light it has a red velvet kind of color and it's really dark. can anyone please explain what it might be? |

May I suggest finding a gemologist/appraiser specializing in probate? |

Ok. I just thought that i can find out what it was on here. I already have a private attorney. But it's up to me they said to find out what he has and what i can sell for the paperwork to be done. the retainer fees were not enough. |

There is not enough information in your post for a wild guess, let alone positive identification. Sorry. Picture, perhaps? |

Put them in direct sunlight and see if you see a star appear in them. They resemble Idaho star garnets. Alas, if I.am right the price is pretty inflated. It is what the people at the public mine area like to quote, but it ain't so. Competition from very inexpensive Indian star garnets puts a hard cap on value. |

I already did that with the sun test. And they are so dark in the middle that the only light goes out through the side. (Please excuse my bad nail polish I've been polishing silver all night. ) lol. Attachment:

If I had to guess, I think it is a large garnet cabochon. |

You need to look at the stone illuminated by the sun (or another bright point light source) rather than shining light through it. I just noticed the label says 'strong 4 ray' which is basically labelling them as star garnets. With any luck some will have 6 ray stars though. |

I've tried the sun. The stone is still to dark. But thanks I'll try another way. |

If there is starring, you'll see it it reflecting the sun, not shining the light through it. Look at this one: https://www.gemselect.com/other-info/ab ... garnet.php |
