A client of mine purchased a nephrite ring on eBay in May.
He brought it for an appraisal last week.
The seller claimed that the ring had a retail replacement value of $6500.
My client made an offer of $5000 which was accepted.
Long story short, the ring is frankly uninsurable.
Following is a pic of the atrocity:
Th center stone is glued in, beads are missing, many diamonds tilted so a thorough cleaning would dislodge them. Top of the ring is 18k (as represented) shank is 14k.

Would you just describe the ring as it is and value it as crap, I mean scrap.

It is worth 5000 dollars if they didn't mentikn the tilted diamonds and he takes advantage of eBay's generous return policy. Hopefully he is still in the window.

I think you are being a little generous in your description!

I did an in depth assessment of the condition of the components for the client, stating the ring was not in insurable condition.
No value ascribed.
Also the jade was described as "Hetain" jade.
I added the coment:

Quote:
This gemologist does not believe the jade in this ring fits the description of Hetian Jade and therefore should not be described as Hetian.
Hetian, also known as Hotan, is located in northwestern China (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) and has always been synonymous with the best nephrite, known for yielding the famous top-quality white “mutton fat” jade.

Traditionally named “Hetian Jade” is mainly from the Kunlun (Karakoram) and A’erjin (Altai) Mountains. Most of the production from these two areas is white, light greenish white, or light green.
Nephrite with a very obvious green hue, like the example in the ring described herein, is called “green nephrite” (“Bi Yu” in Chinese). Most green jade production is from the Manasi River Valley in the south of Jungar Basin. Primary deposits are located on the north slope of the Tian Shan (or Tien Shan) Mountains. In the trade it is called “Manasi green jade.

The client received a 100% refund.

Oh, it wasn't the seller....it was Amazon who issued the refund. They will attempt to retrieve the funds from the seller.
Both PayPal and Amazon offer incredible protection for the consumer.

Bloody hell! that's horrendous, but why why why would someone purchase something like that on ebay? Thank god for the refund system! but sellers like that shouldn't just have to refund, they should be kicked off the platform.

Thank you for the Jade education though :)

The fellow who purchased the ring is bound to a wheel chair.

There are some bad eggs who have been banned routinely from these platforms. They just join again with new names, credit cards and contact info.
