a question - what metals were used in the old Bohemian garnet jewelry? We have some pieces that are the same color throughout the metal, and was slow to react to a 10K acid solution.

Thanks for your answers!

Garnet jewelry was actually a poor man's jewelery that was supposed to imitate the expensive rubies (1800-1900). Accordingly, the metal was made of such alloys, except the Biedermeier period, where foam gold was processed (the thinnest sheet of silver or gold, the pieces are then worked hollow and were filled with shellac etc.).

The really old garnet jewelry till 1900 are made in Tombak, a brass alloy with a high copper content.
Garnet are initially always rose cut and are lined with silver foil and cork.

Afterwards 800 and 835 Silver till 1970

Gold Garnets jewelry are really younger. Towards the end of the 19th century, such chains also appeared in the low-priced standard gold (250 gold), in 1900 also in 333 gold and 375 gold. It can not be ruled out whether occasionally higher-quality alloys appeared in custom-made products at the time. In industrial production, however, the higher-grade gold alloys are used only after World War II.

Thank you for very informative reply!

I have seen the silver and base metal versions, but this time it appears to be one of the low-karat gold pieces.

Once again, Thank you!!!
