Need help identifying this as i have tried a jeweler and a geologist with both having no idea and one suggesting it was man made. It was retrieved from a river bed about 6 or so feet down in a clay layer from tasmania near a town named maydena.

It appears to be a classic blue goldstone, a man-made glass with crystals of copper that give it a sparkling effect. Its shape doesn't look very natural either. I can't say anything for sure from a picture but that's where my money would go. It's amazing how often manmade glass is found in places it seems like it shouldn't occur.

I have a former student who became a jeweller and once set on gold a man-made glass of that kind (orange version). He had it back from Turkey or Egypt and was convinced it was a sunstone. Looks like he did't benefit much of my gemological teaching Definitely this stone seems to be the classical night blue version of the man-made aventurescent glass. Look (with a loupe) for the triangular shape of the copper platelets inside.
