hi, i just found in my house a microscope leica giagem mark XII gemolite or something like that, its conditions is like new and it was used just something like 10 times, what is it worth and to whom? thanks
Depending on its exact vintage and its condition it could be worth anywhere from $600 to very slightly over $2,000 (very rarely) Most mark VII s sell on ebay for between 800 and 1500 It also depends on what ephemera come with it. If it has extra oculars, auxiliary lenses, dust cover hard case , extra lighting , instruction book and other goodies it can add to the price.
Ironically if its too new the price might be less because the newer far east made microscopes(labeled "Leica")are less desirable than the older USA made American Optical and Bausch and Lomb. But there are also people that don't know that the older scopes are better so sometimes they will go higher. Also sometimes there are GIA students who want one "RIGHT NOW!!" and they get bid up. This is because the new ones are four to six thousand bucks.
As with all ebay auctions it just depends on how many potential and serious purchasers show up on the particular day the auction is run. Sometimes they bring more and sometimes less. Very recently(last few days) I was watching an AO equipped one with the pretty all white AO scope which I always wanted an example of. It went for merely $871. A bargain.
Post some pictures and we can tell you more.
As for who the potential buyers are GIA students, Gemologists and Jewelers.
Search ebay with the terms GIA Gemolite and look at completed and sold auctions.
I took a picture its attached, how can i know where its made and all that? I dont have the box and guide menu i know it was bought something like at least 20 years ago in hong kong.. Thanks for the help !
If it says GIA Gem the base was probably made in California and there is no telling where the scope was made probably the Phillipines or Singapore but none of that matters much.
If it is a GIA Gemolite it will go for the prices mentioned above. Depending on luck and good fortune. They were carried by various retailers internationally. GIA has a facility in Hong Kong but I don't know if they did 20 years ago.
