Hi,
It's fine: no need for apologize :-)
Gemology starts to be very complex... it is to complex... but it is chance for laboratory to build business!
Perfect gem laboratory should include to many expensive equipment: Raman, FTIR, UV VIS, PL spectrometer, LIBS, ED-XRF: is set - must to have... even with all that you must spend time to have learn how to use... I started ~20 years ago... i have time for it... look at http://www.gemmoraman.com: they have Raman and FTIR for very reasonable price, more to come...
Off course all small thinks UV, deep UV, photo system, filters, lasers etc. will helps and increase your productivity... and main thinks: brains is only thinks, what could not be replaced...
If you can: spend money for really good microscope and base: really 120x magnification could be important for sapphire, usually it is good to have 6 - 100x that kind of range you could only find for top systems: Leica, Zeiss... once you try: no way back, its really different...
