I have 2 of those and one huge long wave but I needed something for use out in the field especially in the sun while collecting corundum off Corundum Knob at Chunky Gal Mt.

Hi all,

Thanks Alan but when i see the price for a "simple" led, wow:

https://www.thorlabs.com/newgrouppage9. ... up_id=2814

Nearly 400€ without vat... too expensive for me and my little budget. I need a 220-240v unit, all US's sites offer only 110v, i saw this affordable unit but with only longwave:

May be I can change a valve and put a switch :

@drsue for the field there's this kind of lamp but only 4w (edit: 1w or 2w), i don't know if you can find a more powerful set : http://uvp.com/minilamps.html

With regards to cost of LEDs at wavelengths below 300 nm... I did say they are pricey. But look at those OPTAN LEDs, a relative bargain per mW. And uniform output across the wavelength range. Makes me want a set.

With regards to long/short wave UV lamps, you might try a Raytech Versalume. They have a 230 V model, and one that can run on AA batteries.

The 405nm laser will make almost everything fluoresce, therefore it will not reflect the information you will encounter in gemological texts.
Gemologically speaking LW: 365nm; SW: 254nm, which is what is in Kassoy's unit.

Something to think about.

Can someone tell me what is the value of noting the SW UV response in gem identification? Why is't the simple crossed filter technique good enough for identification. What more does one need? :?: :?:

Of course, if one wants to an appraiser, but appraising has very little to do with gem ID as the stone's identification stone's is already known, one needs to put the UV response on record. :D :D

I use UV with regularity in Gem ID.
It's just another clue.

I believe students should consider the cost:benefits.

You know, I purchased my UV cabinet 25 years ago.
Certainly cost effective for me. I use it every day.

O. K. Moana,
wilsonintexas has just posted my drawing for a simple yet accurate specific gravity rig on a new thread, "Alan F.'s drawings for S.G.". If there are any points you don't understand (or can't read!), don't hesitate to ask.
