i doubt it works with Gemstones unless it gets proper calibration and software

but i liked their pocket size handheld spectrometer much more: https://www.consumerphysics.com

The Changhong smartphone uses the SCIO spectrometer module. A basic limitation of SCIO, which is marketed as "NIR" spectrometer, is the limited wavelength range: only 700 - 1100 nm
(https://consumerphysics.desk.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2226579-what-is-scio-s-wavelength-)

NIR spectroscopy is widely used to determine material composition, as the band mesured in NIR are "overtones" of the FTIR bands. Usually, the NIR wavelength range is about 700 - 2500 nm. SCIO uses only a small fraction of it, therefore the discriminatory power is limited, in comparison to a "real" NIR spectrometer. In contrast, the TellSpec minature spectrometer has a double wavelength range (900 - 1700 nm) and might be better suited... http://tellspec.com/

Speaking about NIR databases: there is already a free database with NIR reflectance data from rocks &minerals from USGS, with almost 900 entries. Recently, I compiled a database from this data set for use with my Spectragryph software: http://www.effemm2.de/spectragryph/down_databases.html
