I recently picked this little guy up as part of a mixed equipment lot: "The Gem Refractometer" by Gem Instruments. I was shocked to see that in person it makes a Duplex III look big: It must be an older product, since it has a hefty metal body (smaller than the duplex III but heavier). I don't know as much as I'd like to about the history of Gem Instruments, but they did always make great stuff. Has anyone seen one/have a sense of the rarity?
I'm a bit late on that one, but this is quite an awesome find. Three years looking for one of these and only found one for sale (unfortunately the prism was badly scratched). Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no built in monochromatic yellow filter (thus you'd need a special light source).
Yes indeed. I have a GemA LED sodium like light source for now. Itm ended up with a suite of duplexes but this one is easily the nicest to use. To be fair it is almost unused while the duplexes are all scratched up, need to get those repolished. I rarely use it, though, since the raman is a lot faster.
