I tried to search for something on the Lapidary Corner: Colored Stones and got the following:

I spent not a small amount of time wondering why I couldn’t search this forum and looking for information related to my account access. I couldn’t arrive at a reasonable explanation why I was not allowed to do a simple search.
After a few days I tried to do the same search in a different browser where I wasn’t logged on and actually got a list of search results. So someone who hasn’t registered has more access to gemologyonline.com than I do? Why is that? Is this a bug?

Well, post 10x and you won't have to log off. As I explained, this is an anti-spam tactic. The "logic" was not designed to meet with your approval, but it does meet with ours.
Not 100% sure why it works thst way, but I think member searches may see more forum sections. Of course the google search in the aodebar is also very handy and available at all times. Spam is pretty bad, you might be surprised how many attempted registrations come through every day.

On can search with google search, but they can not post unless they are members. Spammers are looking for places to post. Years ago, I would spend an hour a day removing posts about viagra, cigarettes, cell phones, etc. I don't anymore.
Yeah, it's a pretty amazing system. I used to help out on another site that was a similar target but didn't do manual approval of accounts, and it was a nightmare. Every few days several would get through and post a bunch of spam. My favorite was the one offering counterfeit currency, which was a bit more spammer criminal than they usually are. Definitely something that could cause problems.

I do manual approval of new accounts on the usfacetersguild.org website, and for a while we were getting hundreds of spam registrations per month. A couple of tweaks to the registration process has reduced them to one or two.
