I recently acquired two pieces of jewelry (ring and necklace) from a store. The person sold it to me for a "nominal fee" - he claimed they were authentic.
The "rubies" have scratches on its surface - one of them have scratches that look like spider webs or cracks. I can feel the scratches when i scrape against it with my finger nails. I don't know much, but I've read that rubies are extremely hard 9/10 on the Moh scale, so only diamonds or other rubies can scratch them...which makes me suspect they are fake rubies, or at least the cheap lead-glass infused types that formed surface scratches. However, I scraped a zinc coin against the surfaces but wasn't able to scratch it.
I plan to go to a jeweler to get them checked out, but the closest one is quite far (even with good traffic) from me. If someone on this forum can tell me that it's an obvious fake, then I won't have to drive over to appraised.
Thanks!
