hello everybody,
i run a small jewellery business and have only recently taken an interest in gemmology. i purchased a cheap digital microscope and have been looking at gems with it for a few weeks.

i was looking at this ruby last night - the seller says that it is unheated. i thought that the small, melty droplet inclusions could be spall marks or burst crystals but perhaps i'm wrong. i've only seen burmese and thai corundum up to this point and all the unheated ones have silk. i don't see silk in this one at all.

i would be really grateful if anyone could tell me more about the inclusions i have photographed and if this gem is unheated. i'm also interested to know where the gem came from - i'm guessing Africa.

thank you.

syrius.

What I see on your pictures seems to be mainly superficial impurities - sweat or fingerprints.
Did you try to wipe the surface of your stone before taking pictures. It might look quite different.

What are you basing that on, though? Every shot seems to be focused on oily drops on the surface of the stone--literal fingerprints.

I checked with two gem labs and they both say untreated.

And another question - have you done a refractive index and verified it is not garnet? The color seems off to me. (It may be my monitor).

Which 2 labs would those be Syrius?

Why don't you clean the stone up and rephotograph.....
