Hello All , I am confused by this gem report from a lab in Bangkok , pic attd . It has based its identification on two tests , RI and SG . Both the test results are given in a wide range . For RI the range is OTL so perhaps they were not able to give a test reading but they don't show a reading for SG as well. The given range itself is 3.90-4.80 .

Can positive identification be based on such range based results and does zircon , the given gem identity , have such wide variation in its SG. ?

Lab is not among better known here rather like a flourite in the face of a diamond and I went in there for its low price and quick returns .

I intend to submit the stone to another lab tomorrow , meanwhile it would be better if I could get an opinion of those who know the testing game , specifically on SG of Zircon.

Thanks

Mazhar

zircon's SG and RI do vary an awful lot based on how metaminct it is, but I think 'an awful lot' is more like '4.6-4.7' when it comes to SG. the range they give appears correct, but that's literally the entire range.

Stephan , Firstly I never knew Zircon had such wide range of SG , thanks for this info and yes it does seem Lab has given the range on the report and not the actual reading of it. However , have sent it to another lab for reconfirmation.

Thanks
