Hello all! I have been doing some research lately about citrine, this research has led me to discover that the majority of citrine on the market is actually heat-treated amethyst. There seems to be some debate over whether or not this is really citrine. I do know that citrine does form naturally, but some people claim that when amethyst is heat-treated, it becomes citrine, other people say that it does not. So now I am curious! Is heat-treated amethyst really citrine or does it have to be formed naturally without alteration to be considered true citrine? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Citrine is broadly defined, and it includes both the iron colored heated stuff and the natural stuff, and even the irradiated stuff. It just has to be quartz that is yellow to orange. Some people get mad about treatments or try to split hairs (especially if they're selling untreated citrine :) ) but there isn't a serious separation in terminology there. The teo types do look a bit different though and each fills a different niche.

I agree with Stephen.
Citrine is defined as golden or yellow quartz.
