Dear experts,

We are about to secure a 57,000+ carat emerald gemstone discovered in Madagascar in 2017 and I would love some expert opinions on whether this is actually an emerald.

I have attached 2 reports,a photo and asked them for a GIA report which they agreed to produce.

Would very much appreciate your feedback,
Trozona

Good grief.
Let us know when you get results from the Gemological Institute of America.

What you have supplied, IMO, is a whole lot of nothin'.

Ding, Ding, Ding!!!! Caution advised.

Madagascar is known to produce very large green beryls/ Emeralds. Often low qualities, worth very little relatively.

The way this stone is has been photographed and lit against a black background it is impossible to tell if it is a Beryl, and if so, about its quality.

Will GIA even issue a report on rough stones?

I think so, about the rough stones....but most gemological instruments were not made to balance 57,000+ carat specimens.

Sidenote, the "university of madras" description of beryl looks to be lifted directly from "Gems: Their Sources, Descriptions and Identification" and includes some fairly outdated information (old ideas about vanadium). I wouldn't trust a university report to start with, that's not how serious gem ID is done in a commercial setting, but that's a big 'ol red flag. Real gem reports don't reproduce all of the known optical properties of a gem on them, and they sure as HECK don't do thin section studies (not that the pictures look like a real thin section photo anyway).
They also have a photo of what might be a partially sawn section of it? The other pictures look like they could be an iron-colored green beryl, not emerald at all.
Yeah I wouldn't touch this one. Way, way too many red flags.
edit: yeah, looking at the australia study (which describes it as light green and slightly opaque, very bad news!) their methods are ridiculous, at least from a practical standpoint. They might have been using it as a chance to give someone time on their equipment but doing destructive testing on a valuable gem would be extremely dumb when nondestructive methods (raman! visible light spectroscopy! ftir!) would give a definitive answer much more quickly and inexpensively.
