Hi I am very new and I only joined today. I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to find research information, historic or current about colour change garnets, spinels and sapphires. I have an assignment I am doing and I am having difficulty finding information of any kind on colour change gemstone. I can however find information on Alexandrite but that is not what I am looking for. I hope someone can help? Maree

Hi Maree,
try AJU. The major gems all have their pages decked out with links to G&G articles from the period 1930 something to 1980. Scroll to the bottom of every color changing gem and see what the GIA published over the years. A quick glance reveals a mention of an alexandrite like sapphire on the sapphire page and a blue to red cc garnet on the garnet page.
Furthermore you can start digging through the really historic sources in the Gemology Source help, your personal library of historical books on the subject of gemology.

Gems and Gemology have featured several articles on Color Change Phenomenon over the years: Here is a list of article published after 1982. If any of the articles sound interesting, they can be downloaded (for a $12 fee) here: http://gia.metapress.com/content/121035
Also, you can call the librarian at the GIA and get help with locating information: 800-421-7250 ext. 4046
In copying this list for you, I notice the article by Gubelin in the Winter82 issue repeated again and again. This might me an excellent place to start.
