Tom Schlegel passed away last night after a seven year battle with multiple myeloma. He was known in the gemology community as a prolific designer of gem cuts, most cut by his wife, Lisa Elser. Future details to come

Here's what I wrote on Facebook. I'm not really able to respond to much, but I'm being well cared for and am able to focus on grieving and healing.

I am wholeheartedly with you, Lisa.
I am sure that the strong bonds you have forged with the companion of your life will continue to envelop and warm you beyond time.
May he rest in Peace and may you also find Peace

Our deepest condolences go out to you and yours. We did not know your special someone, but in reading your words he sounds like a good and great person to have known.

That's truly sad news... I remember the post here with a pic of him before undergoing radiotherapy, holding a morganite piece and joking about irradiating crystals... How cool can you be, joking like that? It was a while ago, I really hoped everything was then going OK...

I'm starting to be able to respond to folks. Thank you all.

Tom was a remarkable man, and yes, he could find joy in life even through cancer. The technicians when we took that photo looked at us like we were out of our minds :-)

We had nearly 7 years after his diagnosis and lived every minute of it. I miss him more than I knew you could miss someone but he's always going to be with me.

Lisa
