got a question from a friend of mine which requires help to be answered (translate: i have no idea what to reply...LOL)

is there an import restriction rule in the US for pearls, mother-pearl and coral that involves a certificate (or a paper) of origin?

Same question for the UK about extra-EU same products.

Thank you very much in advance to whoever would have a clue to share.
ciao

Albe, I can't give you the specifics but I can tell you when I have imported pearls there have been fees. This doesn't happen with any other commodity I've imported so far.

Thank you Jason,

the question was indeed more focused on the request of an "origin certificate (or report, paper)" than on the fees,

Canada follows CITES guidelines, and there are several coral species on the list of banned goods. A certificate of origin could not hurt. Don't know about the US.

Specifically with regard to the UK part of your enquiry, imort contols are now hamonized at the EU level. This means that whatever the UK controls may be, they will be exactly the same as the controls in place in Italy. That said, the some of the national authorities like to play their little games (none more so tham the Brits). The UK giuidelines are here http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort ... e=document
and here:
http://berr.gov.uk/policies/trade-polic ... ing-branch

I can't see quickly anything that should be a problem for your friend but the second link and its references should, perhaps, deserve a careful reading by any importer. If I can devil more for you or you think that private discussion would help on finer points, you have only to let me know by PM.
