We just got back from a several day trip to Aswan. One of the things that we visited was a botanical garden, and in the museum/expostion hall I came across a display of carob seeds, the original "carat" weight, which had me standing there in fascination.

Unfortunately, since these were in a glass box, it wasn't possible to put something next to them for scale, and despite my hassling every semi-English speaker in the place, it wasn't possible to buy any to take home either. T-shirts were another story though ;)

I thought this might interest any of you who have never seen them before, as was my case up until a few days ago.

Why wouldn't they sell any? I didn't think they were that rare.

It is also used as a cacao substitute.

They wouldn't sell any because they don't sell seeds at all. And my husband was getting tired of following me around the garden looking at latin names on the trees in the hopes of finding the one that it came from just in case there were seed pods on it.

Ever stick one of the seeds on a carat scale?
