I am in the process of setting up a small tank for a goldfish and eventually some guppies. The lighting system includes a night feature that uses blue LEDs. I have a small collection of New Jersey fluorescent minerals that would look cool. But are they safe to put into a live fish tank?

I believe that would be a function of the chemistry and solubility of the particular mineral, not whether or not it fluoresces.

I agree Barbra. I'm concerned whether the rocks will be chemically inert with a solution containing so many nitrates (nitrites), ammonia and such. I might have to find a Geology Forum. I should probably dig the rocks out of their box so I can ask a better question.

:? Perhaps an aquarium forum might be better.

avoid fluorescent minerals which are radioactive
avoid fluorescent minerals which are water or HCl soluble and incorporating toxic elements

Well, Jersey fluorescents means Franklin, and that means calcite, franklinite, willemite, in all likelihood.

I don't think those are going to kill your fish any time soon; the calcite could conceivably harden the water to a small degree, but that's what water changes are for, don't see a problem.

Water will dissolve stone, molecule by molecule.

This is an interesting topic as I too had the idea of marketing all my
stock of hopeless stones. Heavily fractured Scapolite is very pretty
underwater. I also have pounds of granular material like that.

I'll make tests and take pictures
