I found this fascinating. I'd heard about the phenomenon before but hadn't seen such fine photographic documentation. Maybe this holds some clues for handling those stressed tourmaline crystals that tend to self-destruct during or after cutting.

That's really neat! I wonder if crossed polarizers can be used to image strain in gem crystals, (thus avoiding the dreaded exploding tourmaline).

That was my thought Michael. After I get my taxes filed I'm going to play around with some tourm xls and my polariscope to see what I can figure out.
