Not being a minerologist, I sometime's (often) run across a new word or term I haven't heard before.
Today's word is "mineraloid" and it's associated with some common gem's we know, as well as some not so well known mineral...oid's.

P.S. Somehow "amorphous sound's more romantic.

Well, I guess that's a much better use of the suffix -oid than some I've seen, such as "factoid" (which seems an oxymoron to me :? ). Here's the what of -oid:

-oid

Function: noun suffix
: something resembling a (specified) object or having a (specified) quality <globoid>

So far in my GIA studies, the word hasn't come up, but I guess it will be handy to know just the same :) .

So a "Tabloid Factoid" would be something like "Michael Jackson is actually an alien!" True in appearance only, without the proper chemical structure to be correctly designated as alien?

In reading this and relating it to the healthcare field, it struck me that the word hemorrhoid doesn't really seem to fit the definition here. Maybe we should change the medical term to ass-teroid? :smt105
