I took some friends who came for a visit to the souk here, and ran across these, which I couldn't resist. The vendor claimed that these are stamps for making jewelry. Personally, I don't really care if he was lying through his teeth, I just think they are pretty neat! Some have a motif on both ends. If you click on them, you get a bigger pix.

What are these made from Africanuck? Have you seen any jewelry pieces that look as though they may have been stamped with these kind of blocks? Similar motifs?

They are iron of some kind (you can see a bit of rust on them), and you see medallions with this sort of thing often, although the vendor assured me that they are now mechanically stamped rather than done with this sort by hand. Once again, no idea if it is true.

The one in the second picture is quite obviously well used, which is probably normal, the stamp is of "Mashallah", sort of a "ward off the evil eye" word used often here by the Egyptians. The others, as you can see, feature camels, pyramids and sphinx, and that would obviously be more a tourist thing.

I might have to buy some wax and start sealing my letters with them, LOL

It all sounds perfectly feasible to me. And to have your own personal seal (not the mammal) would be cool. The return of the Queen of the Nile.
