Don't know if you guys would be interested but there's an amazing article on the British museum of natural history website about how scientists are now able to discover the colour of species that are now extinct by looking at their structure. I think it's similar to how moonstone et al get their colour. I know fossils aren't gemstones but it's interesting to relate them - hope you enjoy it.

On the website homepage on the right hand side, underneath the wildlife photographer of the year , there's a list of articles. On the last one it says "more news" and you have to click there, it's a few stories down and called "colouring in the fossil past"
