Just cos you don't have enough Aussies around here!

Stumbled across the forum last night, spent a fair few hours reading, there's a lot of great information on here.

I'm currently at the beginning of a 2 year diploma of Gemmology at the GAA in Melbourne and loving it. Some of the concepts are hard to get my head around (particularly crystallography) but the hands on experiences and the pretty gems more than make up for it :)

Right now I'm researching tools to get me started. I've just purchased a refractometer and a polariscope, now what's next ;)

Hi up there baobei18 :smt006

All the best with the Dip. As you say, lots of good info here.
Might I suggest a darn good cushion to sit on.

Haha thanks for the welcome. Forgot to mention that I've got my 'basic set' from the GAA - a loupe, cloth, tweezers, chelsea filter and dichroscope (although we're yet to learn how to use the last two) :)

Cushion sounds like a good idea!

The dichroscope you use to spot pleochroism in a stone, what kinda did you get? A calcite one or a filter one? In the case of a calcite one you look through the dichroscope (you eye close to the viewing hole) while illuminating the stone from the back to spot different colors. In the case of a filter one you hold the filter close to the stone, away from your eye and move the two different parts of the filter over the stone to spot different colors. Don't forget to look at the stone from all sides.

The Chelsea filter requires a more complicated and fatiguing user method. First you have to find a window. Then you open it, take a few steps back and after a short sprint you cast the filter out the window as hard as you can. You then hop on ebay and buy yourself a 4 dollar 405nm laser pointer. Use the google search function at the top left to search the forum for '405nm laser' and read what it's use is...

I also suggest you get stuck into the Gemology Project (link on left).

Haha, thanks for the advice, I'll do some research on the 405nm laser (just started talking light and colours and 400nm vs 700nm last week :))
